Contacts on your iPhone, iPad mail app

Much like Google, Apple also houses your contacts in a separate service. Though not an app, your iPhone and iPad both have a partition in the Settings app specifically for contacts. Here’s how to find them:

1. Select the “Settings” app on your iPhone or iPad
2. Scroll down until you see “Contacts”
3. Select “Contacts,” and click on any contact to manage the information in that profile

How to add contacts to Gmail

Adding contacts to Gmail is as simple as adding them to your Google contacts. Google Contacts is linked across the apps you use with your Google account. Here’s how:

1. Go to contacts.google.com
2. On the top left of the window, select “Create contact”
3. Select “Create new contact”
4. In the popup window, enter the information for your new contact
5. Select “Save” at the bottom of the popup window

5. Select “Save” at the bottom right corner of the window

How to import contacts

1. Visit contacts.google.com
2. From the left side of the window, select “Import”
3. Select “Select file”
4. Choose the CSV file saved to your Mac you wish to import
5. Select “Import” at the bottom right corner of the popup window

That’s all it takes! The contacts in the CSV file you uploaded to Google contacts will show up in your list. Keep in mind while it’s typically immediate, it sometimes takes a while for contacts to show up, especially across devices.

How to export contacts

If you want to export your Google contacts for use elsewhere, it’s also very simple. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Visit contacts.google.com
2. On the left side of the screen, select “Export”
3. Choose the list you want to export (Note: You can export a single “label” in Google contacts, or your whole contacts list. You won’t be able to select multiple “labels,” which are sub-lists of contacts. If there are multiple lists you want to export, you can create a new label for those contacts, add the label to those contacts, and export that label’s list.)

4. Choose your “export as” option (Note: Google CSV and Outlook CSV are different, so choose carefully.)

5. Select “Export” at the bottom right corner of the window

Your exported contacts will be saved as a CSV or vCard on your Mac.

How to delete Gmail contacts

There are two ways to delete Gmail contacts: individually, or by group. Here’s how to delete a single Google contact:

1. Visit contacts.google.com
2. Find the contact you wish to delete
3. On the right side of their row, click the three-dot menu
4. Choose “delete”
5. Confirm you want to delete the contact

If you want to delete multiple contacts, follow these steps:

1. Visit contacts.google.com
2. Hover over the icon of the contact you wish to select for deletion
3. When the checkbox appears instead of their image, select the box
4. Follow steps two and three for all contacts you want to delete
5. When you’ve selected all the contacts you’d like to delete, select the three-dot menu at the top of the window
6. Select “delete”
7. Confirm your choice

Exporting Your Gmail Contacts

Export Formats

Now, some of you might be a little confused at the different export formats that you can choose from, and more importantly, which is the “right” version that you should export? First of all, there is no “right” version, but rather the intention of your export.

Outlook CSV – This is a format that exports all data and contacts and converts the names to the default character encoding. As the name implies, this might be preferred if you’re looking to migrate from Gmail to Outlook.

Google CSV – Unlike the Outlook CSV, the Google CSV takes your data and exports it using Unicode. This is done to help preserve international characters. However, the downside to the Google CSV is that not all email programs, such as Outlook, support Unicode. This means that if you plan to migrate to Outlook, then this might not be the best export format to choose.

vCard – Unlike CSV which typically stores data in alphanumerical form, vCard actually supports richer contact data, meaning that in addition to the person’s name and email address and phone number, it can also store things like photos if it is available.
